A Blank Canvas

Life is like a blank canvas.
For many, that can be intimidating. If you've ever tried to write a story or create art, you know the pressure of a blank page—especially when you have no idea where to start. New experiences, like transitioning from middle school to high school, starting a job, or meeting new people, offer the same kind of uncertainty. But they also present an opportunity: a chance to show up in a new way. Like an artist with an empty canvas, we have the freedom to create anything.
Often, we feel anxious in these moments, believing we need to craft a masterpiece right away—a perfect version of what comes next. But artists have erasers. They smudge, adjust, and refine. Writers revise, delete, and rewrite. Life works the same way.
The difference is, in life, we don’t always create with visible ink. We show up, but sometimes we hide who we really are. I used to do that. I wanted to be liked, so I played it safe, blending in instead of being myself. But how could people truly like me if they didn’t know the real me?
I was afraid of what others might think, so I did what many artists do when they don’t know where to start—I copied. I mimicked others, following their lead. And I was good at it. I still am. But over time, I realized I could create something original too. By first imitating, I learned. Then, I took the pieces I liked, let them shine, and gradually, I became more myself.
Every time we introduce ourselves—to a person, an experience, or even a new version of our own lives—we have the chance to express who we are. To evolve. To mature.
The blank canvas isn’t something to fear. It’s an invitation to express yourself.
Express You.
